I know how to use these tools.

Does your handyman/woman?

While up north for one of my summers when I was managing a place called "The ISLAND LODGE," (near white fish falls)

The Ojibwa Chief took me under his wing, perhaps because I had the "hots"  for his daughter.  They taught me how to live off the land and to make log cabins the old way and the new way with chainsaws.  Between my job and the things the Indians taught me, I had no time for the girl.

The chief was a very smart  and wise man.  I had the pleasure of being invited to his home for dinner.  I had no idea what a great honor it was.  I really liked them a lot and I will forever thank them for the things they taught me.  While I was up there, close to White Fish Falls, I carved a 48 foot totem pole.  It may very well be still up there.  I will see if I can dig out some pictures of myself then.  Much If what I wore the Indians made for me, I had leather pants, leather boots a vest.  I looked like Daniel Boon without the hat and gun.  I was also taught how to sharpen a knife and an axe so you should shave with it.

My education started when I was a kid.  With  near photographic memory, I was able to see someone do  something and I could pick up the still  in doing it, almost instantly.  I learned how to turn pottery in the Swiss Alps, I even learned how they created those pewter tops and made my own while I was there.

I don't know how my parents arranged  to leave me in those different places for days at a time.  But all I can say is: I loved every minute of it.  Today kids sit around and don't do much, they don't want to work and many don't want to seam to want to learn.  It is the Video game which has taken over.  I am so glad I grew up when I did and I saw the things I saw and I  did the things I did.

For most  people it would have taken 10 life times.  I also learned how to carve wood at age 16 and worked for a very famous Hungarian carver for a few weeks  each year.  My the middle of the 2nd week, I was "turning " bowls on a lathe.  I remember the carver shaking his head in awe, on how this kid was able to understand and pick it up so fast.  There is just something about working in wood. It is better than dating.

I remember, even taking a finish woodworking course  in Europe and the teacher would not let me near the tools until I learned how to sharpen them first.  That was hard to take.  I no longer use my hand planes.  I use electric ones today.

Most trades people including painters, have no idea what they are doing, I am sorry to say.  I have seen so many things done poorly, it is almost tragic.  Painters who have told me they have been painting for 10 years  and they only put one coat of paint on a job?  They could be shot.  Yes. shot!  I am not going to tell you what I have seen people do.

This is the proper way when painting the outside, and if anyone tells you there is a new way, they are not telling the truth.

1. scrape off any old loose paint

2. Sand the whole area to make sure the new paint will stick to it.  Scraping is not enough.  The surface  must be etched or scratched up so the new paint will adhere to it.

3. Prime the bare wood spots.  If you want to do a really nice job, sand the "difference" out if the old paint and the wood so that it is smooth.  It takes lots more work, but it is more professional.  Wait 24 hours, even if the paint can says  you can paint in  20 minutes.  If the wood really soaks up  the first coat of primer, I will sometimes put another coat of primer just on those spots.  Some people prime the whole thing.  That is OK  but  make sure that the printer is tinted  close to the colour you want.  If it is slightly different  you can see when you paint over it, and easily spot places you missed.

4. Paint the whole thing and wait  24 hours between coats. Because the paint is still fresh, no sanding is required between coats. If you  leave the job for months and then come back to it you will have to sand.

5. Give two additional coats of paint. With a 24 hour wait  between coats.  if it rains then don't paint for 4 days afterwards.  Make sure the wood is DRY DRY as I like to call it.  The more time you spend on it, the better it will look and the longer it will last.

Good paints for outdoor use  is either CIL , Benjamin Moore.

And though Latex (water base paint) has come a long way, I would still use oil or Alkyds outside.

And latexes in door with the exceptions of bathrooms and woodwork.

This way this job.  will last 10 years or more.

I used to test tools for Black and Decker way back in the day before Dewalt

I was one of a hundred guys who was given tools  to  try and then to give feedback of the tools.

That was the best education of tools for me.  Now I know which ones are good for what.  Not all tools are the same.  And not all brands are good.  And not all tools in that brand so great either.  If you want to buy a tool, ask me first.  I can get you a better deal sometimes too. I wish  I made money doing it.
